Ryan Lawn & Tree was a former client of the current agency I'm employed at. I was the lead developer on this project and developed the site fully from a blank theme to the current live site. With this project, I was in charge of every aspect of the web build.
This was a pretty big build for a lawn and care service company. Before typing one line of code, I had to really understand and visualize the data for this site. They had so many services and so many tags and categories, that I had to lay out a wireframe for the codebase before I even started.
There were also parts of this site that were challenges for mobile. Certain blocks were heavily designed for desktop and trying to find a solution to have those blocks shrink down to mobile without compromising the design was a challenge.
Once everything was laid out and I had clear direction of how to structure the data, it was time to start coding. I built this site from scratch, meaning no pre-exising styles, no pre-coded blocks, nothing. I used gulp to process my CSS and JavaScript and wrote in SASS. This was a brand new site so I was able to code it on a staging server while their old site was still live.
Overall, this web build really helped me understand the importance of planning. Most times, it's easy for me to just start coding right away and then make up the solutions as I go. With this project, having time to figure all that out first before coding anything, actually sped up the coding process by a great deal and prepared me for another huge site I was about to develop.
